During the Roman era Egyptians used to paint a portrait of dead person on wooden panel and then lay it into coffin/sarcophagus. They are extremely lifelike as can seen from this example from 2nd or 3rd century AD. If you would like to see more of them just google ” Roman encaustic portraits”
